School Cook Training
Skills worth sharing

With cooking becoming a higher priority on the curriculum, we believe that school cooks are perfectly placed to support practical food education in schools.

They’ve already got the cooking skills, passion for food and use of kitchen facilities. All they need is the right training and support.

We’ve developed a training model designed especially for cooks and catering staff. It covers all the basics of teaching children to cook - giving school cooks the confidence and skills to run cooking clubs, support cooking lessons and more.

Training sessions include:

  • Healthy and safety in the cooking classroom
  • Preparing set-outs
  • Teaching knife skills
  • Progression in cooking skills teaching and learning
  • Curriculum cooking opportunities and topic work
  • Wider school cooking activities (eg community events, parents’ classes)
  • Recipe and resources

Here’s what the school cooks thought of it:

  • 100% felt inspired by the training
  • 100% feel more confident about teaching cooking
  • 100% rated the session as 5/5

Emma Scholefield, a Catering Supervisor said, “I need the skills to set up a cookery club at school and I’ve learnt so much – including techniques, planning and easy-to-teach healthy recipes. This training will also help school cooks form a connection with children.”
